Description: Built in 1798 by Capt. Thomas Worth (Fort Worth, Texas, is named for his son, William, a hero of the Mexican War), this colonial inn has had many distinguished guests over the past two centuries. Daniel Webster, Nathaniel Hawthorne, abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner, and John F. Kennedy (while a senator from Massachusetts) have all stayed here. In fact Hawthorne was writing his Twice Told Tales while a guest at the inn.The inn is small, with 12 rooms in the main inn all with private baths; some have balconies offering harbor views. The Garden House has two spacious rooms with king-size beds, private baths, and balconies overlooking the gardens below; a smaller room shares a bath. Two of the barn’s five rooms have private baths; three share a bath and shower. The inn is open Apr through Oct. No credit cards.
