Description: Located in the historic 19th-century Athenaeum Building, the Rathskeller is the granddaddy of them all. Established in 1894, the Rathskeller is the city’s oldest restaurant still in operation. It routinely is voted the best German restaurant in town. An extensive menu features classic, gourmet German cuisine and contemporary fare. Some of the favorites are sauerbraten—beef roast marinated five days in the Rathskeller’s own marinade, then slow roasted and topped with brown gravy accented with currants and ginger—and rouladen—beef roll-up filled with bacon, onions, spicy mustard, and tart pickle wedge slowly cooked for tenderness and topped with homemade brown gravy. Of course, a huge beer selection is available, and so is wine. The outdoor Biergarten is a fun place from late Apr through Oct, featuring great live bands from acoustic rock to blues to polka music. Guten appetit!
