Description: This local institution will captures the eyes of even the most distracted driver cruising by on Federal Highway—imagine an old-school fair ride gone into overdrive, and you get the picture. Flashing light bulbs framing a striped, retro sign beckon you to come in and see what all the fuss is about. Once you step in, you’re in an alternate universe. First comes the old-school candy store, selling candy you didn’t think existed anymore (Willy Wonka chocolate chews, anyone?) and enough toys and trinkets to make your head swim. Next come the two adjoining dining rooms—one packed with license plates, old road signs, and tatty old wooden booths, the other filled with bits of nostalgia like antique strollers, bicycles, and pots and pans hanging from the ceiling. If this place looks familiar it’s because it’s been featured on the Today show, the Food Network, and Rachael Ray—no surprise when you realize it’s been reeling in the crowds and churning out homemade ice cream since 1956. Choose from over 30 flavors—including weekly flavors. They offer their fair share of massive sundaes, banana splits, and other classics, but smaller appetites won’t be disappointed: Even a single scoop can be ordered with a dollop of whipped cream and hot fudge—it arrives at the table with a cherry, colorful sprinkles, and a tiny American flag-on-a-toothpick, guaranteed to make you smile and feel like a kid again. Aside from sweet treats, they also serve diner-style American classics like burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, and chili. There’s a massive children’s menu, and kids will be endlessly entertained by the surrounds (though parents may have trouble preventing a sugar high). Open Mon through Thurs 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Fri and Sat 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m.; and Sun noon to 11 p.m.
