Description: What started in 1963 as a small fundraiser for the Bluff Park Elementary School library (and raised $600) now attracts some 30,000 people from across the country for the one-day event. The Bluff Park Art Show, held the first Sat in Oct, has become a rite of fall for many Birmingham residents. The park itself, set on 4 wooded, rocky acres atop Shades Mountain, makes for a delightful setting for the 100-odd artists invited to show their work. The artists work in a variety of mediums: painting, jewelry, clay, sculpture, photography, fiber, mixed media, glass, and more. Today, the show’s success means the Bluff Park Art Association donates significant funds to entities such as the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama Symphony, Space One Eleven, as well as local public school libraries and music programs. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
