Yes. With a daughter about to graduate grad school with a degree in marine biology she will have no choice but to work an unpaid internship for the first year and hope to get hired on by that firm. Contrary to popular belief, if you have a degree in science you will need to leave the US to find a job. Chemists and biologists are being replaced with green card workers even in the best of the Fortune 100 companies. And teaching is not an option as we crank out more PhDs in the US than there are jobs for. So science grads have two choices...abroad or work for the government as a policy wonk.

Is this common? People with grad degrees becoming this desperate to work for free for a whole year? Wow.

The bolded doesn't sound so bad. Government jobs= Often your best chance at long-term financial security in this country.

I think the internships abroad are just an extension of studying abroad, both with ridiculous price tags.

The article linked says the kid didn't graduate yet but got 9 college credits for this internship. Everyone has to pay for college credits and students generally do not get any pay for college credit internships. He used financial aide.
The people quoted signed up because they wanted international experience on their resume. The comments on most of the posts here bear no relation to the actual story.

Two Companies Just Made the Case for Reforming the H-1B Visa Program | Jobs With Justice

This is an interesting link for more info about what is going on in the USA with H-1B visas, which are people being brought in from foreign countries to replace Americans in STEM jobs, because H-1B visa workers can be exploited by employers and be paid a lower wage than American workers would demand...

In effect, the H-1B visa program is similar to off-shoring, only it's off-shoring within the United States by importing the foreign workers to temporarily work within the US.

I've seen this several times in my personal life - people with hard science majors being forced to work in unrelated fields, do internships, or have to resort to getting a teaching license. Pure science is in a sad state of affairs.
