If you are in the field of doctoral studies, do not put "candidate" until you actually are. As others have mentioned, becoming an PhD or EdD candidate is something that occurs toward the latter end of you studies after you have passed many other hurdles. You are awarded "candidacy" by your program, you do not receive it automatically by being enrolled in a doctoral program. This is actually a big deal for a doc student...and a sign you might actually finish your degree one day!
On your resume/vita, either put "graduate/doctoral student in (subject)" or "currently enrolled in.." Also, you can put the year of expected graduation, but be realistic! Avoid "class of XXXX" as I'm not sure anyone actually graduates in the class/year they originally planned. However something like "degree expected 20XX" could be helpful for future employers to know regarding whether you have just started the program and/or if you are nearing the end.
