What do you think of being unable to get a new job while having one? I've been on the job search for about a year and I am still not able to land a new job.

Keep trying. I've had a S__T contract job for 2 years and have been very actively seeking ever since. Every time I get close, big pharma lays off more experienced chemists and sends more jobs to China or converts them to more S__T contract jobs.
Well, part of your issue may be that your only searching for work in your location. You can't easily travel for an interview out of state while working, so I'm assuming your not looking outside your state. After my last layoff, I started searching for work out of state and found something within 2 weeks. I would probably be unemployed today if I wasn't searching out of my home state (Michigan).

Yup, it seems the only thing we export is jobs. Perhaps we should start exporting our congressional seats to China and see how fast things change.
It took me a year to get an offer while at my current employer, it was a spooky year because you feel ultra expendable and vulnerable. Once I get a few offers and my company counter offered I felt better. I have been seeing things pick up ever sence. Some areas of the country are probably still depressed. You can look out of state and opt for a phone interview, of course you have to be really careful about looking at cost of living increases, just because a wage sounds high does not mean it really is.
There are too many factors to properly evaluate just on what you've told us. Are you able to get interviews? Are you getting any response from your resumes at all?
Answer these and that will give us some idea of where the problem is.

I get sporadic interviews, but never able to land a job
At just a glance you're currently employed, looking for a new job, in an economy that's been stuck at an official unemployment rate of nearly 10% for a couple years.
In order to switch jobs you will have to bring a lot of value to your prospective new employer to be hired. Can you do that? And are there others out there who can do the same?

Can someone give me advice?
At this point, you're fortunate to even have a job while there are countless millions without. For now, consider yourself lucky that you're not one of the countless millions.
You're been on the search for a new job for the past year while having one, why are you so afraid? Do you see yourself getting laid off soon?
Keep trying but don't quit your job. Many out here have been looking for years with only sporadic calls for interviews. Your scared? No, scared is about to lose his/her home and has no where else to go.
