having been aresident of Eagle River for over 40 years, I can honestly say, " if your going to relocate here, don't "
Wages: Unless your retired or work for government, you can expect $ 8.00 per hour at best.
Housing: The housing bubble on lakefront homes is starting to burst. Only a fool would buy at these prices.
Tourists. Laugh, laugh laugh. Eagle River, the town of t-shirt shops. Yes, new main street, but the place is a dump.
Like to eat out? Over 75% of the businesses are for sale..like stale food?
Starting a business here. Good luck.. average life of any new business, 2yrs. Artsy type..one year.
Property taxes...if you like to pay, come to stay....$28mm high school for 500 kids soon to be 350 kids...realitively new elementary school...same deal.
Hospitals....you check in, but you probably won't check out.
family..oh yes, to be a fishing guide. in two years you'll be divorced, your ex hubby in the bars and you working three jobs to survive.
Retire... like snow, 40 below, cars wont start. roads not plowed?
Tourist...just leave your money at the door and go home!
Fishing... cast a line in any of the weedy chain.
Biking...laugh...silly helmets.
All in all, a great place to retire and die.

Sorry things got so bad there, it use to be one of favorite areas.I use to live in pembine.The rich have a way of destroying things but at least you dont have to deal with illegal immigration yet.

Problem is, the illegal immigration thing is slowly creeping Northward in Wisconsin. Green Bay, The Fox Valley, has issues with it now. Eagle river at one time one was really something special. I agree with the original poster--it's taken a slide downward over the years, for various reasons. That being said, Northern Wisconsin, for the most part, is still a wonderful place. Lots of beauty and a lot of smaller towns that still have their charm and liveability.

Eagle River Wisconsin is a wonderful place to live or retire. In fact twice in the last four years Eagle River has been choosen by "Rand MacNally" and "Where To Retire Magazine" as one of the top places in the United States to retire. There are very reasonably prices homes in the area. It is is true that lakefront homes have escalated significanly in value over the past decade and many local residents can't afford them. Some of the reasons this community receives such an excellent national retirement rating include the many area churches, excellent medical and hospital facilities, excellent public library, senior citizen programs with the YMCA and the Northland Pines School recreational facilities. Additionally with so many area service clubs and organizations is is easy for people to make new friends or get involved with the community. Additionally year around recreational activities are plentiful. Eagle River is surrounded by the Nicolet National Forest and the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forests. Eagle River is the county seat of Vilas County, which has 1,318 inland lakes and 73 rivers or streams. As such boating and all recreational water activities are plentiful. Fishing in general is excellent with over 290 area lakes holding large numbers of the prized Musky, the king of all fresh water fish. Seasonal fall colors are spectacular, and there are many rustic wooded area drives to be enjoyed. And when the winter season arrives many rejoice. Eagle River has been trademarked (1964) as the Snowmobile Capital of the World. With well over 600 miles of beautiful snowmobile trails groomed daily by 6 local snowmobile clubs, Eagle River offers some of the best riding anywhere. That is why readers of Sno-Goer Magazine have often ranked Eagle River as the "Best Area Catering to Family Snowmobiling" in the nation. Other winter recreational activities include cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, downhill skiing, birding, or helping to build the big ice-castle in the popular downtown area. The area is plentiful with many excellent dining establisments including Wine Spectator Award Winners. Family style restaurants are plentiful as well. And the downtown area, complete with it's new multi million dollar sidewalk and roads have many shops and unique stores offering the most current of merchandise. Tourism is the major part of the local economy. Eagle River is one of the Midwest's most popular family vacation destinations with well over 100 area lodging businesses, from mom & pop resorts to some of the finest lodging facilities anywhere. Something in every family budget price range. While it is true that the local income pay scales are less than large city pay scales They compare favorably with other Midwest resort tourist areas. The Eagle River area is a great place to visit or retire in. The year around quality of life is about as good as it gets, anywhere.
