Maybe somebody can help settle an argument. I have a coworker that's an admitted weatherophile, somebody who obsesses about the weather and watches the Weather Channel 24/7. Whenever it gets hot he always exaggerates the temperature saying that its hotter than the mercury says because the thermometers they use are in the shade. I know they're shielded from the direct sun but don't they still measure the air temperature? I know my thermometer gives me an accurate reading until the afternoon sun hits it, then it shows a warmer temp than local temperatures.
So would a thermometer show a lower temp if it was under a large shade tree, really being in the shade? Is it hotter than thermometers read if you walk out under the sun? I know how real feel temps factor in humidity and wind speed.
Thanks if anybody can help.
