Experience? But zero classroom experience. Why would someone get a PhD in Educational Policy and not teach, one wonders? Oh, that's right, you become a lobbyist for the NEA.

I would imagine being Rushern's (ex) brother in law didn't hurt.

As someone pointed out, it took decades (and even 40 years ago when I first knew people from Prince George's it was considered one of Maryland's worst school systems) to reach this point so it's unrealistic to expect improvements that won't take decades. Implementing improvements in primary schools (intensive reading intruction for example) won't be seen at the high school level for 8 or 9 years.

I've been waiting for someone to point out that he works for a teachers union. Did this just fly over everyone's heads? I'm not against unions but you'd think someone would be jumping up and down about this. This is also completely opposite of the current trend in school reform. And can you really get through a PhD in education policy without any classroom experience at all? I did not know that! That's pretty disappointing. Although, in theory I think this can work out if he is willing to *listen* to the different stakeholders.

You'd think being Rushern's ex brother in law would hurt, not help!! That's one forgiving family lol. Is there no qualified neutral person in the entire county? Really?

I would be concern how the makeup of the board will be impacted now that, not only do you have appointed members, but the fact that those appointed members now leading the former leader. I don't know how you expect to have a positive environment. I mean you hope that these individuals will be professional, but if you have seen some of the meetings already this year, there was already drama. Hopefully he can reign everyone in.

By the way, speaking of issues, I thought this might be interesting for everyone to see.

Philadelphia school district laying off 3,783 employees

Wondering what some of the issues were, let's just say it's very interesting that Philly is having the same type of budget issues that PG had. Perhaps, him leaving may have already helped a lot.
