"Wii U will be HD, supporting up to 1080p resolution just like Xbox 360 and PS3, but beyond that it's unclear how powerful the hardware will ultimately be when it ships sometime next year. Nintendo never provides a full breakdown, although the company did say that the form factor is "near final." While many assumed Wii U would be on par with the current HD consoles, word is coming in from developers that it's quite a bit more powerful."

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia commented today, "Some of the developers we spoke to indicated to us that the console will have 50% more processing power compared to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. This is yet to be confirmed by Nintendo."

mh... If this is true (and this would be typical for Nintendo in the last Years, to not boost Specs, but use some kind Innovation) its technically not really good news, but oh well, its around the same boost as from Gamecube to Wii(50%), which was not bad.

I suppose Sony and Microsoft will include again 7 to 10 times better Hardware, than last Generation.

That is still nothing but a rumor. There is a very big chance the PS3 is still gonna be superior.

Beside, Nintendo are a generation late now and will always be. Anyone who has a PS3 or 360 won't buy this because they will be waiting for the new xbox and ps4, which should come out in 2013 or 2014.

What's the point of buying something like the Wii U that we've had for almost 5-6 years with the PS3 and 360 when we can just wait a year or two more and save the money you would have spent on the Wii U on an actual next-gen console.

Sure, the Wii U may have more power than a PS3, however it has one maaaaajor problem. Miyamoto specifically stated that you are limited to ONE Wii U controller being active.

If yes: No surprise considering the PS3 is 5 years old.
If no: No surprise, it is Nintendo we're talking about here.
Seriously though, I hope it is to be honest, with the sheer scale of advancement in processing power made between 2006 and now, the Wii U MUST be more powerful.

Regardless if the Wii U turns out to smash more hardware barriers than the 360 and PS3 combined and offers players everything functionality-wise from the PC to a home theater system and ushers in a new order of world peace, playing Zelda, Super Mario and Metroid in Hi-definition ain't going to move me from my PC throne.

While true, you can still use 4 Wii remotes. Note this is in the early stage of development/production so things can change. I have a feeling this would be increased to 2 by time of release.

Yes and No. Nintendo is on a 5 year plan for most of their systems i.e. after 5 years, create a new and support both for X number of years before phasing out the old. What that means is they are about due. As for Xbox "720" or PS"4", it will be a hell of a lot longer than that. Microsoft has already stated that Xbox 360 would have at least a 10 year life span, which puts it at 2015. Being that Kinect just releasing late last year to great sales, I would assume we will be right on schedule for that date. Being that developers haven't maxed PS3, I would assume they also have life to that date as well. Back to Nintendo... based on their 5 year plans, Nintendo will be creating/r&d a new system again about the same time Sony and Microsoft debut theirs.

Another thing to consider is that to appreciably surpass Wii U's performance the next Xbox or Playstation will probably have to have about 10 times the processing power. That's not likely to happen in a home console any time soon given how sensitive consumers are to price.

The Wii U will rise and fall on the strength of Nintendo’s long list of intellectual properties which has always been their strong suit. It’s not like gamers around the world are going to fall out of love with Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Kirby and countless others. The fact that Nintendo is releasing a more powerful console is really just for compatibility issues with modern televisions and to draw in a little more third-party support.

Considering that most places require that you turn in a controller for console tradeins, the concept of being forced to use "last gen's controllers" for "this gen's system" is a littler weird.

Should also mention that another reason I'm not surprised that the Wii U will be more powerful than a PS3 is because the Vita is almost as powerful as the PS3... and it's "just" a handheld.

If it does, great. If it doesn't, Nintendo haven't moved an inch in the console market.

Also, how can you say; 50% more powerful than the PS3 and 360 when the PS3 already has the edge over the 360 in terms of Blu-ray processing power so which one is it 50% more power than? The PS3 or 360? Because that might make the difference to the specs.

Not to mention ps3 is true HD while 360 is upscaled. Due to the fact that it can only support Dual Layer Disks..
