I am currently collecting the max $450/wk unemployment benefit here in California.
I may be asked to do some paying freelance work that may or may not exceed my weekly benefit. From all the research I've done, CA EDD doesn't discourage self employment work so long as it does not disrupt the pursuit or acquiring of full time work. That said, I've read that one needs to receive pre-approval from the EDD prior to reporting any self employment income -- they essentially want to make sure this work isn't going to disrupt your search for full time work. Does anyone know or have experience on how to go about getting this pre-approval? Most stories I've read involve people reporting self employment work and then being told by the EDD they should have gotten pre-approved first; their benefits are then put on hold until an interview is scheduled to approve that freelance work. So I'm trying to be proactive and get this preapproval. Any advice?
I also have to say there is a lot of conflicting info. on how to report self employment income on the continued claim form. Assuming it's 1099 work, I've seen people say write the following for "employer name":
1. write the company name & address you did work for (heard this is wrong)
2. write "self" or "self employed" (read mixed responses on this)
3. write your name & own address
For "reason no longer working" the common response seems to be write: "piece meal", or "job ended"
I do know that if my freelance work exceeds my WBA, I will likely have to reopen my claim.
