I liked both shows but as noted above, both were very different shows. With that being said, I think Dallas was better overall. J.R. Ewing was just so incredibly evil!...lol. Larry Hagman played that role very well and made J.R. one of the best villains ever on TV.

Two different shows that appealed to very different audiences. Dallas targeted an older one while MV fans were younger and more diverse. Miami Vice made a phenomenal impact in pop culture and the landscape of mens fashion in the 1980s, without a doubt. Every other guy had his face half shaven like Crockett, wore Ray Bans and generally embraced the "Don Johnson" look and vibe. Brands like Versace and Armani had it's followers in the early 80s, but MV really made it "hip" to be a consumer of these labels, in addition to Ray Bans.
The music on MV, aside from the fashion trends made it a hit, fused with the action, colors and general South Fla atmosphere. Everytime I hear "You Belong to The City" now, I can't help but think just of Miami Vice.
However, Dallas and MV were outstanding in their own right and I enjoyed both.
With Dallas, my interest was piqued during the time "who shot JR?" phenomena swept the country. Prior to this, I mainly watched it periodically and did not follow it religiously nor did I form any connection to the characters or story. I did like JR, though. The villan you loved to hate, but wouldn't watch the show without him.
In fact, many viewers who wouldn't have watched Dallas otherwise were gained during this time due to this cliffhanger. I still wonder had JR not been shot, would the show have been as successful?
As mentioned, Dallas could be compared to Dynasty and other similar shows of that era.
The one thing both shows do share is that they had and still do a cult of devoted fans worldwide.
