How bad was the crack epidemic nyc? (murder, today, American)

I heard that the city was gritty and bad and poor....times square was roaming with crack heads but i would like people who worked or grew up or lived in NYC in the 1980s to the 1990s to tell me how bad was it from there views what they seen?
I grew up in The Bronx in the 80s.
Although my area was good, the South Bronx where I went to school was a war-zone.
I cannot tell you how many gun shots I've heard over the years there.
I saw a guy get shot. I saw a man get stabbed. I saw a puppy get thrown out of a car. I saw one crack head push another crack head off a train platform.
It was NYC! Crack "epidemic" may have just been used as an excuse, before that it was Heroin, before that - who knows.
But the issue isn't that it was bad then exclusive to it's size and status in the world... you understand - it was a big city! The Big Apple! Take the best and, more importantly, the worst of society and you would find it there. Forget about this "crack epidemic" nonsense. it's not relevant. What happened between then and now isn't that the ills of society were somehow solved, that the allure of cocaine has passed from favor, drug abuse and crime are still problems. It's that the manager's of the city found the winning formula for cleaning up that part of Manhattan.
Thank Ruddy Guliani's "zero tolerance" program in the 1990s. Yes it targeted drug markets, but it also targeting minor things like grafetti, subway gate jumpers, "squeegemen" - it addressed the root causes of crime in (some would say) a ruthless manner. But it worked! They also used statistics and methological approaches for finding where exactly crime was occuring.
I used to travel to NYC quite frequently for business, staying on time square. 1980's - Massage parlors, porno theaters, panderers, etc all over the place. Huge theater marquee's with titles that I could not print here. In the 1990's it all changed. Now there is a Disney Store in time square. In some strange way, however, it took out some of the flavor, color, and mystique of NYC. It's just a bit too sterile.
It was rougher, that's for sure. Nonetheless, I was allowed to go out and play when I was a kid unlike kids today who live in 'Mayberry' by comparison, but whose parents are convinced their kids will be molested, murdered, and dumped in a ditch if they leave the house unattended.

There is a thread in the NYC forum about this. It was pretty bad. My old neighborhood had a whole group of junkies that used to hang out together. They were a scary bunch.
A lot of Wall Streeters, Artists, Fasionistah, musicians were doing Crack and coke back then and now Heroin and Rx Drugs. People tend to forget that a lot of wealthy people do drugs in NYC and Celebs. They're the ones who keep the dealers in biz not the poor.
