It means that they're not selling you a seat for $2000. Nope. They're selling you someone else's seat for $2000...and that "someone else" is about to get bumped due the infamous "overbooked." That's how it happens.
Even before the Dr. Dao incident on United, a lot of them did everything they could to avoid Involuntary Denied Boarding because IDBs look bad in the reports they have to make to the FAA. Since Dr. Dao, pretty much all of them will go to some pretty far extremes to avoid IDBs.
The extreme that comes to mind is that Delta will offer $10K in cash/gift cards/ future flight credit if it has to in order to avoid an IDB. (I want to say that case involved South Bend on a Norte Dame football weekend)
There are a handful of VIP flyers at every airline who hold unpublished status (Delta 360, American Concierge Key- George Clooney was a Concierge Key in ‘Up In the Air’, United Global Services) that comes with the airline being willing to remove passengers from a flight in order to have that VIP make it to where they want to go. That pool of VIP flyers is small enough that it’s extremely, extremely unlikely that one of them will be trying to get on your flight.
The reason being is he is being a corporatist. This is what I didn't like of him when he ran for president as "Mayor Pete." He has no backbone to the airlines even after the summer issues. It is rare I agree with conservatives but a lot of them attack him because he is a Biden guy, not necessarily for deserved reasons. SWA and in particularly Bob Jordan need to be held accountable, I don't trust Buttigieg for that to be quite honest.
I understand the same. An out of date scheduling system was the issue.
Long story short it comes down to what has been said here and elsewhere many times; SWA prizes earnings and dividend payments to shareholders over reinvestment into company.
Instead of putting money back into SWA it went into shareholder's pockets, this even though time and time again recently SWA keeps getting caught with its pants down.
If this latest fiasco were just a one time thing one may be inclined to cut SWA some slack; but they keep having major issues on a fairly regular and consistent basis.

Yep at least twice in the past 14 months and this was worst of them. I forget if SWA was also in the issue with baggage from the summer travel season.
People plan/schedule things, well in advance. They trusted airlines to deliver a reliable service. (NOT just SWA.) Now, this debacle (that could/should have been avoided,) has created doubt in the minds of travelers. Those, that are stranded, are bypassing air travel and using rental cars in place of planes. This, has put a HUGE strain on the rental car fleets, everywhere. This is almost like a year ago, when there were no cars as the fleets have been liquidated due to some virus. Well, there's no cars, AGAIN.
