I'm looking at traveling on accommodated (not camping) safaris in Namibia, Botsawana, and Zambia (possibly Zimbabwe). Weird question, but I'm curious, are squat toilets or sitting toilets more common in that part of Africa? Not that this would discourage me from visiting, just trying to see what I'm getting myself into.
I have been to Botswana and South Africa and I didn't see any squat toilets during my travels there. Now if you were going to China my answer would be the exact opposite!
Squat toilets aren't a big thing in southern Africa. You'll be fine. Though in Zambia they do have a habit of removing the seat, which in turn makes it into a squatty potty - Though I'd assume if you went there you'd go to Livingstone, and there the accommodations were much nicer than, say, Ndola.
Odds are low that you'll run into or will be forced to use a squat. Like Chava said, if you were going to Asia, that'd be a different story!
You are going on a safari on an likely expensive and professional escorted safari designed for western comfort levels - you will see western toilets I guarantee it.
Squat toilets seems to be a middle east/Asian thing. In Africa I think it's western toilets, or no toilet at all (locals just drop trou and do there thing behind a tree).
Actually I need to make a correction - I did see one squat. On the Zimbabwean side of the Beit Bridge border crossing with South Africa there was one behind the building. It was just a hole in the floor. I didn't see any other squat in Zimbabwe.
