As Christianawati raced late into Surabaya airport to catch her flight on Sunday morning, she felt like the unluckiest woman in the world.
Her 10-member extended family had been keenly anticipating their holiday to Singapore. The five children were going to try out the new rides at Universal Studios, and it would be the first trip away for the babies — her little boy just seven months old, and her brother's baby, who is 11 months.
'"This must have been the best Christmas gift your family ever received," she recalls him saying. "The flight you were supposed to be on has crashed."'
I wouldn't have called the deaths of 162 people a "best Christmas gift" the lucky family ever received. Best luck they ever had, sure, but gift?
Now back to what it could mean when you miss a flight: I once was late to the airport and missed my flight. Got on the next flight a few hours later. The plane sat at the airport with all of us passengers in our seat for 4-5 hours because they found some problem and had to order a new door from another city. Hotel understanably didn't want to refund the first night that I had paid. Anyway, I should just be glad that they did find the problem with the door before taking off!
It's not a pleasant subject, but it does remind me of an incident back in December 1988.
Long story short a friend/colleague of my sister in law, through a series of events, missed her flight from London to the US.
It was the Pan Am flight that was destroyed over Lockerbie.
