I didn't think Wisconsin was on anyone's vacation list! I can't imagine someone willingly going there, on a vacation. I can think of many other places to see, WI is not one of them!
IMHO, all public buildings (including hotels and restaurants) should ban smoking from their premises. Here in NY, there are signs saying "No smoking within 50 feet of the building" and yet people STILL smoke right outside the door!! They should put in a sprinkler system!
Well...that does make it easy for people who are too stupid to look for a non-smoking sign and make a decision as to whether they want to stay at that hotel or eat at that restaurant or go elsewhere.
e-cigs; I smoke on the planes but I do go to the head so as not to cause alarm. Works great, better than nicorette and completely relieves the anxiety and NO SMELL (I dislike the smell of 2nd hand smoke, weird, I know)
I quit smoking and start vaping a few months ago. I have vaped in non-smoking hotel rooms and even openly vaped in hotel lobbies with no issues.
Word of advice about vaping on planes - some of the planes have heat detectors in the lav and e-cigs can set them off...blow it in your jacket as a precaution. I vaped on a plane for the first time going to CA the other week.
That said, when I did smoke I smoked in plenty of non-smoking hotel rooms. Go in the bathroom, turn on the fan, maybe run a little steam out of the shower for good measure....never got busted ever.

Yes, I've been to NYC and I've seen Smoking Permitted painted, with a bright colors, into the middle of the street in front of the hotel. At nite, no problem, as there isn't much traffic, no fear of getting run over, but during the daytime, Yikes! Very, very dangerous!
And if you can't smoke in front of the hotel, and you move to an adjacent, non-hotel building, do these rules prevail as well? And then what & where?
Stand on the hood of a parked car? Walk to Central park?
Actually Im all for non smoking inside any building. As a non-smoker, its hard to get the smell out of your hair, your luggage, your clothes, and somehow the smell gets inside even after you wash everything prior to leaving the hotel. You shower but use a towel that smells because though it may have been in the linen closet, the odor makes its way in there and settles on everything.
I wouldnt go as far as sending smokers a block away or down the street though, heck, just outside the door on the front porch, back porch, or the stairwell is good enough. I really dont think smokers are aware of the lingering smell because they live with it, and thats their thing, their business. But I personally dont want to smell it on me though.
I have friends who smoke and am not going to put them down for it. All I ask is for me not to smell like it.

I take it you have never been to the Wisconsin Dells.... a great family spot.
