I'm arriving at 6 a.m. on a Saturday at the Toledo Amtrak Station. What is the neighborhood like? Can I catch a cab or a bus? Or should I get picked up by friends? Is there car parking? Thanks.

There is car parking. I wouldn't go wandering around blocks away, but I would say it is safe. It's fairly secluded from the neighborhood it is in. I would call a taxi or get picked up, I don't think it is worth messing with TARTA.

Also, actually call a cab or wait till you see their car. Gypsy drivers tend to frequent bus and train stations, and they are the ones who will be INSIDE the station asking if you need a cab.

The train station is safe, but isn't really close to the rest of downtown, unlike most city train stations... it is off on its own. The surrounding area has a history of disinvestment and looks run down, but it is safe.

Any time you can guilt friends into picking you up is the best. TARTA is okay, but it isn't as frequent as buses in larger cities, especially since the public money has been drying up. I wouldn't worry about ??gypsy?? drivers. Just make sure it is a reputable cab company.

Making sure it's a reputable cab company is exactly what I meant. Illegal taxicab operation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I can't recall if I have seen them in the Toledo Amtrak station, but typically you get off the train and enter the station and see a few guys asking if you need a cab. If you say yes, you follow them out and it's just some random guy with a car. Not the safest option, and you never know how much they're going to charge.

Okay... I was invisioning a group of European nomads with wagons camping out outside the train station...

Taxis should have a little taxi license on their bumper.

Thanks for the info....I'll try to get someone to pick me up. But if I take a cab, I'll make sure it's a legit one.
