We always stayed in Fort Stockton when we went to Arizona.

Since the OP makes no mention of where the start and end points of her journey are, everyone is assuming!

'll be driving from Phoenix to San Antonio, too long for a single driver without an overnight. However, ELP is only about 6 hrs so I'd like to go a little farther east the first day. How is Van Horn for an overnight stop? The Motel 6 there has decent current reviews and I'll be traveling with pets.

LOL! It's one of the remodeled ones with good reviews, so it should be OK. The cats don't care where I stay as long as they get their cat food at the end of the day and get to sleep on the bed.
