This. O'Maddys is our favorite hangout in Pinellas, and it's a very broad cross-section of everyone - that's part of its appeal. The food is great, the staff is mostly young and energetic (and do quite well) and you're likely to be surrounded by everything from bikers to millennials to lesbian couples with their dogs.
We're crazy about the place.

OP is not looking to
"live in" a tourist destination. Op wants to be near a
quick commute to a large number of touristy mom and pops restaurants. So
tampa is not it . Where in sarasota would you suggest that the op can by a house for 300K and be in a quick commute to a large number of touristy mom and pops?

I really think Gulfport/Pasadena is a great spot for what they're looking for. Quick access to both Downtown St. Pete and Gulf Blvd along the coast. There are many good independent mom and pops in St. Pete Beach alone.
It took us an hour to get seated at the Frog Pond for breakfast on a Sunday last Fall as one example, and it was worth it.

Frog Pond is good, but when we stay at beach Beverly's La Croisette across the street is our go to.

I really never understand these sort of comments. They make it sound like Gulfport is some remote off the beaten path in Maine. When family or friends visit and stay on the beach we often make the long trip 3 or 5 miles to the isolated village of Gulfport (sarcasm), sometimes we even make the long, tiring, dangerous run all the way to downtown St Pete for food! I know its very far but our cars can somehow navigate the 15 miles that takes a half hour during most peak times. Why sometimes I get real adventurous and make the trip from Pinellas Point across the skyway to enjoy Sarasota or north over the Frankland to dine iin Tampa.

I lived in Ozona in my 20's. Way up in Palm Harbor. Bands used to play at the Casino in Gulfport, we had no trouble getting there along with folks from Tampa, and tourist.
