I recently traveled through the city of St. George along I-15, and I must say that the place seems to have exploded with growth since I was last there in the early 90s. Back then, it seemed about the size of Cedar City. However, now it is much bigger than Cedar City. When did the population growth explosion occur?

If you live in the area, I'd like to hear your take on my observations.

I don't live there but noticed that too when I was passing through. They had a big growth in 2005-2006 when alot of people from CA moved there. At least that is what a real estate agent told me from there.

I was up there today. The city is beautiful and traffic more than I would have thought. People drive much slower than they do in Vegas.
Anyway, one thing that stuck out was the # of white people there. Don't think I have seen any other place so white......

Pretty simple answer, it's about a 6 hour drive from the southern california megalopolis. Without looking at any statistics, I would guess that half the residents of St George who have lived there for less than 10 years are from southern cal, mostly people who wanted to get away from the giant urban sprawl and move to a much smaller version of sprawl. At least they have a natural wonderland nearby in St George.

St. George has exploded with growth in the last several years. When my husband and I got married back in 1999 easily 1/4 to 1/3 of the city wasn't here. We left in November of 2006 and came back in March of 2008 and the growth just in that period of time was insane. Everywhere we looked there was new homes, new businesses, new restaurants, etc.

Speaking of homes in St. George, can anyone tell me who the heck lives in those 4,000 to 6,000 sq. ft. houses up on the bluff's overlooking the freeway. Come to think of it there's quite a few in Cedar City too. The only place I've see houses that big are in the hill's overlooking LA. But at least in LA there's incomes from the entertainment industry to support them. I can't see where's there's enough money in all of St. George and Cedar City to support a quarter of them. And if there is for some reason, why on earth build them on a cliff in Southwest Utah in the middle of a town.

Probably people that came in from California, paid cash and bought them. Just guessing, I haven't really seen them.

Thats a lot of it. Also a lot of doctors, lawyers, etc. And then, too, there is a lot of "keeping up with the Joneses" here.

Yep keeping up with the Jones' is what Utah is all about....I just don't get it but ran into that when I lived in Northern Utah. Also a lot of parents give their kids big down payments for huge houses. My kids brought that to my attention but sorry this parent can't do that.

How in the world do parents do that? Maybe IF you had one child, but here that doesn't happen too often. Do they give all their kids money for a down payment? Cripes.

I hope my kids don't plan on that. Nope...I did it on my own, they can too!
