People have been saying for years, especially with Russia and China so over-the-top, that host countries now actually tend to lose money.
Has the world had enough of the Olympics?
Do the Olympics still matter?
By John Branch
In short, the Olympics are built on excess, tangled in geopolitics, rife with corruption and cheating. Each Olympic cycle raises uncomfortable questions about sustainability, environmental damage and human rights.
The Games are presented as apolitical, but that is both impossible and untrue. The honor of holding them has faded; the Olympics strain to attract host cities, which are often left staggering in the aftermath. Climate change is shrinking the map for viable locations, especially for the Winter Games.

Whatever is wrong with the Olympics, I don't think climate change, sustainability, and the insistence on being apolitical are the problems. There are plenty of cold places, venues that can be resused, and politics are bound to turn off a certain % of the audience, regardless of which "side" of an issue you support.
Focus on corruption in the IOC and cost requirements. Both can be improved. The second is important, you can still have the games without so much pomp and circumstance. Focus on the sports, cut costs.
