I find the coaches comments that he was surprised by how badly the other team played and that he didn't expect his subs to play that well a bit disingenuous, did his team not already have lopsided wins against other teams. Full court press against this team taught them nothing, 13 points a minute amounts to little more than a layup drill. Waiting until the second half to sub and a 23 second rule was a to late.. Coaches like this destroy the sport.
The coach had them whipped 101-2 at halftime and obviously did the gentlemanly thing by easing up in the second half.
I have nomercy for the losers. Let's face it, a lot of kids just don't have any business playing basketball, or any other sport at which they stink.
When I watch The Karate Kid, I always root for the bad instructor who's motto is, NO MERCY.
Same applies here. The coach was a wimp softy. I don't know why he didn't full court press the whole game. Winning by only 159 points when he could have won by 200 or 250 taught his team mercy against a bunch of loser girls who could have been humiliated into never again touching a basketball. Isn't that the true spirit of HS sports
These are high school kids playing. There is no point in running up the score that much. If this was college or the pros, I would probably see it differently, but there is something to be said for teaching a bit of compassion and humility.

Anyone can be a coach. Very few can be the instructor.
Baseball & Softball have a Mercy rule.
Softball - 15 runs after 3 innings, 10 runs after 4 innings and 8 runs after 5 innings.
High school coach gets fired: The final score of 161 - 2.
The winning coach gets canned for running the score up, even after pulling all the starters after the first period.
Basketball and football don't have a mercy rule. They are timed events.
As a coach, I would never ask my players to play down. That is a good way to get bad habits and sloppy play. My job as a coach is to make them better players. We come to put a boot on your throat and never let up. If your team flatout blows a big one, don't ask me to play down to your level. Don't fire me for not playing down, when I did everything loyal to the team and the sport I could without forfeiting the game either.
If it is not a timed event, things can get out of hand.
Timed events, you come, play the best you can for an hour or so and go home.
