Parallax barrier is the current method of choice. It works best for small displays and uses more power than standard displays, but it eliminates those stupid glasses.
There have always been multiple methods of seeing 3D. The parallax method was used in the Soviet Union in a small theatre at one point. It didn't work very well. Juggler is right, it works fairly well on small displays, in a manner similar to (but not exactly like) those lenticular 3D postcards.
I guess I'm not surprised some people took the flickering lashes seriously. People believe some pretty strange stuff. Can you imagine Marilyn Monroe with flickering eyelashes like that? She'd probably have taken off. "Happy Birthday, Mr. President..."
