I'm cross-posting this from the general California forum--not sure where it's best placed.

I have just accepted a professor job in Monterey, CA. I’m debating whether to live in Monterey or farther away. Monterey seems lovely but a bit sleepy.

I’m in my young thirties and single, so I’m a bit concerned the pool of young folks in the Monterey area will be limited. I love being within walking distance of work, so one option is to live in Monterey and commute to the Bay area or elsewhere on weekends for more of a social life, culture, etc.

The alternative is to live farther out—perhaps as far as Palo Alto—and commute to Monterey to teach. Palo Alto seems to be a much more vibrant town, plus it has very easy access into SF. But the commute seems rough, and I've been spoiled being able to walk to work these past few years. I'm aware that both places are pricey, Palo Alto particularly so.

Any advice for me on quality of life, the commute, other places I should be considering, etc.?

I'm not sure why you're so attached to Palo Alto but living on the Monterey Bay (either in Monterey county or in Santa Cruz county) is preferable to many.
Santa Cruz county is quite "vibrant", you'll be on the coast, relatively close to your job in Monterey and San Francisco is less than a 2 hour drive and a fairly easy one when not during commuter times.
And if you are an "outdoorsy" kinda person (as your screen name suggests), you'll appreciate what the county offers in that regard.

Certainly agree with all that, including the Santa Cruz County suggestion.

I've commuted from Palo Alto to Monterey before and its unbearable. It ruins your day or just makes it worse. There are places comparable to Palo Alto in Monterey County like Pacific Grove and Prunedale. You may want to look into Salinas also.

Really appreciate all the responses. I’m inclined to live locally, probably right in Monterey. A colleague who does the Palo Alto-Monterey commute had suggested it, and I was curious to sound others out, but I tend to agree with those who judged this much too long a commute.
