Hi Guys,

This is my first time posting to this forum !
I recently received a job offer from a tech company in Santa Clara, and I am looking to move there by next month.

Looking for a place to rent (Maximum budget 2300$). I would love to rent a place around 2000-2100$ but for the right place I can go upto 2300$.

I would like to live somewhere in between Santa Clara and Milpitas area. I play competitive table tennis (Ping pong) and there is a club in Milpitas (ICC) which I am planning to join. So looking for a place which is at a reasonable commute to both my workplace and my club.

With some research, I feel Santa Clara, Northern San jose, Milpitas are good options to live.

I found an apartment on craigslist https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/apa/6054709432.html
Asking rent is 2095$ which is within my price range. I am just wondering if there is a catch here Since it feels to good to be true. Or are the rents in Milpitas in this range only ?

Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated.

The catch for that price is that it's a blue collar neighborhood and very close to 680 Highway.
While I think it's not a dangerous area, it is right next to a Savers store which is a version of Goodwill or salvation army store, so there might be traffic from shoppers, especially on weekends.

But, what would bother me more is the noise from the highway. 680 is a major highway and if I can avoid it I would not want to be exposed to incessant traffic noise & air pollution. But that's just me.

Santa Clara, Northern San jose, Milpitas are indeed good options for you considering your work & table tennis club criteria.

Welcome to the bay area & good luck.

I strongly believe that the unit is in law. Not really a apartment.
Milpitas like the rest of San Jose, 2 BR average $2700

@Semiworker @Lanienguyen Thanks for the response !

I did some more research on the California living style, and felt that it would be better to stay close to my workplace (To avoid traffic in peak hours). I have narrowed it down to Northern San jose (area that is somewhere between Milpitas and Santa Clara on google maps) and Santa Clara (Where my company is located).

I am using YELP to check reviews on apartments in Northern San jose and Santa Clara. I can see a lot of tenants complaining about security (especially about the cars) and even thefts. A lot of them mentioned about car break-ins (broken glass) even in gated communities. Is it that bad ? How do people deal with this ?

Also, If I have a budget of $2400-2500, Can I find a decent 1 Bed 1 Bath apartment in these areas ?

Yes, $2400-2500 for 1BR in the North SJ and Santa Clara & in decent condition, is very doable.

When our son moved back to the area after graduation he changed apartments twice. He too, was really worried because of bad reviews, but he was actually quite happy with the living condition in both places (but not happy about paying rent). It's good to check review, but I would keep in mind that there is always a higher likelihood of people posting review when they're unhappy then when they're happy. Another thing is to be prepared for rent increase after the one year lease is up. It's common to hear 10% increase.

If you're worried, here is a link to crimemap for you to check out the area.
