Sunnyvale native here, moving back to the Bay Area (finally!) from the DC region. My husband and I are considering renting a house in San Bruno (just west of El Camino and south of San Bruno Ave). Frankly, I can't remember ever being in San Bruno other than on the way to SFO, and have no general sense of the city & its neighborhoods. So, some questions:

How foggy does the area get? How windy?

What's the general traffic situation - I'll likely be using Caltrain to commute to SF, but my husband would probably drive down 280/101 to get to Palo Alto (train might be doable for him too, though).

How's the airport affect things? Would we be on the flight path, and if so, how much of an annoyance is it once you get used to it?

Is the area walkable at all? We have two dogs, and would like to have a nice neighborhood to stroll around, and (hopefully) some decent restaurants to walk to.

What's the general feel of the area? Gritty-ish? Suburb of SF? Young professionals? Families? Safe? Run down? Solid middle-class? I really have no idea, despite being a Bay Area native...

Thanks for your help!

My kids have friends who live in that area. It's a middle class suburban area with mostly families. It's a safe area. Now, the other side of El Camino (east) isn't so hot.

I don't know about all the flight paths. I know planes will go from SFO right over San Bruno's Tanforan Mall, which shouldn't bother you.

The area is foggy, but not extremely foggy (like up in the hills). The sun does come out (unlike some other areas which seem to always be in the fog).

If you want a bit better weather, go south to the next city, Millbrae. Very safe city, CalTrain/Bart, etc. a bit more upper middle class.

Why San Bruno? Why not further south, down the peninsula?

I agree. Check out Burlingame or San Mateo - nicer towns with less fog, warmer weather and no airport noise.

I lived in South San Francisco right on the other side of 380 (El Camino/Country Club). The airplane noise was EXTREME. I mean completely ridiculous. If I was talking with someone and a plane flew overhead we'd both have to wait until it passed. Stake out the area around 7-8 pm, that should give you a good idea of whether you'll be affected by it.

Like the 1st reply said, it depends on what side of El Camino you live on. San Bruno isn't a dangerous city by any stretch of the imagination. However, the east side can be sketchy and because its older it looks more run down. Here's pics I took today of the neighborhood right next to Tanforan mall on the Huntington Ave side.
