I absolutely hate the heat, just curious how close to the ocean I need to be for the cooler temps

I looked at a home in Escondido and it was hot af today. At Gaslamp it didn’t seem to bad. I’ll be looking at place kinda by La Mesa tomorrow. (Next to Lake Murray Park)

Thanks !

Moving to So cal from Denver to be closer to my wife’s family. I’d prefer to stay in Denver but I lost the battle. SD doesn’t seem bad though!

I can work from home, girlfriend is a pharmacist.

La Mesa will be noticeably hotter than downtown, probably not quite as bad as Escondido but closer to that end of the spectrum.

As a rule of thumb, I'd say stay west of 15, although I'm in Scripps Ranch, and we're not as hot as Escondido, so it does vary.

What sort of budget and home style are you looking for?

If your battle was housing costs, then we have bad news. La Mesa is probably splitting the difference between Escondido and beach for temps.

I'd say within 5 miles from the coast is the coolest temps, but like others noted, it depends. There are pockets that throw it off. That said, I wouldn't put La Mesa in the "cool temps" category. It definitely gets warm out there in the summer and fall. Not like Escondido, but highs in the low to mid 90s for sure at times.
There are lots of things to complain about living in San Diego -- just read this board! -- but weather isn't usually one of them, so I'm sure you'll be fine wherever you end up.

I remember you, you’re the guy with the wife, and girlfriend. Just kidding. I would pick La Mesa over Escondido for countless reasons. Good news/bad news on the weather factor. Good news is the majority of the year the weather in La Mesa will be as nice, or nicer, depending on your preference, than downtown San Diego. Bad news is when it’s not, it can be pretty toasty. I grew up inland, and the weather is not as bad as many people make it out to be.

Lol. I’ll never get used to it. It’s definitely “Wife”

Thanks. I wasn’t a fan of Escondido, my wife just fell in love with a house there so we checked it out. The budget is 900k or so but we have wildly different tastes. I want location and 4 walls and a roof. She wants the fancy stuff.

I don't care where you live at, its going to be Hot today inland
Living in La Mesa the Weather is not that bad imo. I will say that La Mesa has a lot of order homes with no central AC/Heat so factor that in on you're Housing hunt.
June/July/August my Electric Bill jumps up at least $100 a month on average from Using the AC.
I have 2 Big ole dogs and 2 Grown College kids that like to use my House as fricken cool zone
On The weekends when I'm home i set my Thermostat to 80, and with the fans going the house stays pretty comfortable.

LA Mesa and Escondido are also very far apart and may impact commute times significantly depending on where your wife works.

La Mesa, way better than Escondido, for all the reasons. I'd also check out some of the homes on Mt. Helix. Some of those properties have amazing views, very quiet, and the right place can fit the budget (though it's likely to need work, mostly older homes, pay special attention to electrical, some of the older ones still have the two-prong no-ground-wire outlets and/or aluminum wiring, both no-goes in my book).
