Any locations near Seaworld 78245 area near lackland airforce base. That U know of
Call United Way at 211. Yes, 211 is the number.
Tell them you are looking for food pantries in your zip code area.
They will then give you a listing of all the places in your zipcode that offer food assistance.
Make sure you get the names and numbers of those places. Then call them all individually and ask them when do they give out the food (day, time) and how often. Also ask about requirements (ID, CPS bill or SAWS bill for proof of residence).
Then also go back to the beginning of my post and see the places I listed that you can go to even if you don't live in their zipcode.
On a personal note, I've spent the ENTIRE year living off of donated food from so many church pantries and organizations. Had it not been for them, I would have starved!
Wow, it's hard to believe that I started this thread almost 1 year ago. Six more days will be one year. Well, since someone brought up this thread again, I thought I would pass along some more information that may be of help to someone!
First, make sure to read my very first post on this thread if you are in need of food assistance and then go from there. Also, if it's your first time going to places for food assistance, be sure to CALL the places I list or any place that someone recommends as the hours/dates/availability can change and you don't wanna go all the way out there to find out that they changed the days and/or times that they give assistance. So do call ahead of time!
So if you're reading this thread, more than likely you or someone you know needs food assistance. Well, aside from going to food pantries, food stamps can help you too. You may qualify and not even know it. You can qualify for food stamps EVEN if you don't have a job (there's a big caveat though after you read this paragraph below).
This is what the Texas Health and Human Services Commission's website says,............. “For most adults between the ages of 18 and 50 who do not have a child in the home, SNAP benefits are limited to 3 months in a 3-year period. The benefit period can be longer if the adult works at least 20 hours a week or is in a job or training program. Some people may not have to work to get benefits, such as those who have a disability or are pregnant.” (Food Stamp Program (http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/help/food/foodstamps/index.html - broken link))
*(Note: the following information below does not apply to those who are disabled or currently pregnant women).
So this is important. As you see, in the large paragraph above, I placed a bold and underlined “20 hours a week” because if you're single, and have no kids and no job, OR you are not working AT LEAST 20 hours a week, you will qualify to get food stamps once every 3 years for 3 months only.
The law was changed a long time ago so that there is a work requirement, which I believe is fair. Even then, no one could have anticipated a recession like the one we're in. Sometimes we just need a helping hand to get through these tough times!
So once again, if you work less than 20 hours a week, you will NOT be eligible for food stamps, NO MATTER WHAT. But, if you are working at "minimum wage" (currently $7.25 an hour – or very near minimum wage) and work at least 20 hours a week, then you're good to go.
If you work 40 hours or above, even at minimum or very near minimum wage, your benefit will still decrease as you should be self sufficient to support yourself moreso than someone only working 20 to 30 hours a week (your caseworker will tell you this).
So if you qualify with your income as noted above, the The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will ask for proof of your last 4 check stubs from your employer.
If you just started the job or don't have the last 4 check stubs, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will give you a standard employment verification letter that your employer can fill out for you.
If you get paid by direct deposit, they will ask to see proof of the direct deposits from your checkings and/or savings account statement(s).
After that, you can drop off, mail or fax the completed letter to your specific office to finalize your case.
If you would like a food stamp application to be mailed to you from online, go to (https://www.yourtexasbenefits.com/ (https://www.yourtexasbenefits.com/wps/portal/%21ut/p/kcxml/04_Sj9SPykssy0xPLMnMz0vM0Y_QjzKLN4g3cwTJgFmW-pGoIsam6CKOcAFvfV-P_NxU_QD9gtzQ0IhyR0UAm2vbng%21%21/delta/base64xml/L3dJdyEvUUd3QndNQSEvNElVRS82XzBfNkw - broken link)) and select the link "Request an application."
You can also call the San Antonio Food Bank at 210-337-3663 and they will mail you one as well or you can stop by any Texas Health and Human Services Commission office (I also list all the locations for San Antonio with their detailed information, at the very bottom of this post) and pick one up.
To find a benefits office anywhere in the state of Texas, go to (https://www.yourtexasbenefits.com/ (https://www.yourtexasbenefits.com/wps/portal/%21ut/p/kcxml/04_Sj9SPykssy0xPLMnMz0vM0Y_QjzKLN4g3cwTJgFmW-pGoIsam6CKOcAFvfV-P_NxU_QD9gtzQ0IhyR0UAm2vbng%21%21/delta/base64xml/L3dJdyEvUUd3QndNQSEvNElVRS82XzBfNkw - broken link)) and select the link "Find an HHSC benefits office."
**Okay. Next step. The Application Process. Here's what you will need for your application: **
--Social Security Card for each household member.
--Texas Drivers' License/State issued ID.
--Proof of residency: your lease from your apartment, mortgage statement or proof of homeownership.
[Note: if you don't have a “leased” apartment, simply ask your landlord to write out a letter for you on letterhead stating how much your rent is, how often you pay it, and what is and what is not included in the rent (bills paid or not) such as, water, gas, electricity, garbage/trash, etc.
If you cannot get your landlord to write it on letterhead, tell him/her to write the letter and then ask the landlord to get it notarized for you. Most places will notarize a letter for about $6-$8. The landlord has to notarize it for you though. You can't do it since he/she is the one vouching for the fact that you live in that residence and pay him/her X amount of rent and other charges. Once it's notarized, make sure to also make a copy in case you need to use it again for future proof of residence].
--Last 4 paycheck stubs or letter from employer stating how much you get paid, how many hours a week you work and how often you get paid (if you get direct deposit pay from your employer, they will ask to see proof of income from your checking/savings account statements).
--Most recent electricity, gas, water, and telephone bill.
--Proof of resources, such as checking or savings statements (* only if this applies to you).
--Award letter from Social Security or Veterans administration (* only if this applies to you).
--Medical bills and/or medication prescription list from pharmacy (* only if this applies to you).
--Proof of children's ages, such as birth certificates, baptismal or hospital records (* only if this applies to you).
--Proof of immunization for all children under 19 years of age (* only if this applies to you).
--Receipts for payment of child care (* only if this applies to you).
--Court order or letter from parent showing amount of child support received (* only if this applies to you).
--Proof of child support paid to individuals outside your household such as court order and check stubs, that can verify the legal obligation, the amount of obligation, and the actual amount paid (* only if this applies to you).
--Letter from friend/relative/roommate explaining that you purchase and prepare food separately (* only if this applies to you).
--Letter from friend/relative/roommate explaining that they are paying for your rent and/or utilites (* only if this applies to you).
--Proof of WIC (* only if this applies to you).
Now, once you've filled out the application in its entirety, and gathered all the specific-applicable and required items above.....then it's time to send it in!
Below is a listing for all San Antonio Texas Health and Human Services Commission locations. You will see a list of the zipcodes that each one serves. Whichever location lists your zipcode, then THAT'S the one where you have to either drop off the application to in person, mail it in, or fax it to that specific location's fax number.
I recommend just faxing it! If you don't have a fax machine, you don't need one as you can a fax from your computer without a landline phone line.
The website, http://www.rapidfax.com, will allow you to signup for a 30-day trial at no charge. You will be able to send 10 MB (maximum size per fax) faxes during the trial at no charge.
If you have a 3-in-1 printer/scanner/fax type of device, whether it's wireless or wired to your computer, most have software that will allow you get the scanned documents onto the computer.
Use CutePDF Writer to convert jpeg images to PDF, and then use PDFSam to “merge” the individual PDF files into one single pdf file.
If the fax is too large (over 10 MB), just split up the single pdf file into 2 seperate pdf files using the PDFSam program, and then fax the two seperate pdf files individually.
If this is too technical for you, just drop if off in person!

I agree with all of the above about Food stamps and applying for aid except for these:
1. I DO NOT recommend faxing anything to DHS, especially the office on Center St. They WILL lose it. Go in PERSON and wait to get a RECEIPT. It's worth the wait.
2. You Only need show proof of immunizations {shots} for TANF. And as always remember a signed statement that vaccines are against your religious beliefs must be accepted and you cannot be penalized for it.

Did they lose your information you faxed? Hope not! Which fax number did you use?
One time, I faxed the wrong number. They have several different numbers on the two different floors of the 321 N Center building. I can recall about three different fax numbers that I've used thus far.
The fax number I gave above for the N Center location works just fine for me.
I faxed them just this past week, I got called the very next day, and she wanted me to go in the day after the phone call! I told her I had to work so I went in two days after she called me, and I got certified the same day of my appointment as they same-day expedited my case.
Going in person and getting a receipt is best, I agree. But yeah, it'll be at least a 3-4 hour wait. I'd fax it....but maybe some won't mind the wait and will feel more comfortable getting that receipt.
For Angels Ministry, think about who might contribute FOR you. I know a lady whose daughter pays for her, for instance. If I were asked by anyone I knew at all or any neighbor, I'd definitely pitch in for them.
Thank you so much for this great information. My family and I have fallen upon extremely hard times and with me being the only one working and 2 kids in the home, it's really tough right now and are looking to find any pantries that will be open on a Saturday to accomodate us. Again, God Bless you and Thank you so much.
