I have the opportunity to apply for a job in Canandaigua and am wondering what the area is like. I have been to Carthage (near Watertown) as my grandparents lived there but it has been about 20 years since I was last there. I grew up outside of Poughkeepsie and my sisters live between there and Albany. Currently, we live in NC . Any information about housing and schools would be appreciated. My husband is interested in the bass fishing opportunities and whether he would have much trouble getting an IT position. Thanks in advance!

Well, I also live in NC (Apex, just outside of Raleigh) and am moving to the same area, Rochester, where I grew up. Canandaigua is a great town, and it's growing at decent rate (not crazy and uncontrolled like the towns down here). It is in Ontario County, which was just ranked the #1 rural county in America to live in by Progressive Farmer. Rochester is only 30 minutes away, and it's eastern suburbs are even closer (some consider Canandaigua a suburb of Rochester now because a lot of people have moved there for lower taxes and commute). It's right on Canandaigua lake, one of the finger lakes. Schools are Canandiauga city schools, which are supposed to be really good, it's a very family friendly area.

I love Canandaigua. If I could wave a wand and take my job to any area Canandaigua would be tops.

It's awesome.

Oneida Lake, just 90 minutes to the east of Canandaigua, hosts the Bass Masters Fishing Tournament every year. Oneida Lake is just north of Syracuse.

Thank you all for your feedback and thoughts. I have found some local sites which make it sound safe, beautiful and most of all peaceful. I will share your thoughts with my husband and check out the newspapers to see what type of IT jobs might be available. Thanks again!
