It finally happened! The region is starting to think out of the box for the first time ever! In the '70s the planners were looking at a Roanoke-Lynchburg-Blacksburg airport but the idea fell through due to some farmers opposition in Bedford County. With the next census it is expected that the Roanoke MSA and the Lynchburg MSA will be qualified as one MSA and the Blacksburg MSA
will be seperate. It is too bad our "leaders" 50 years ago could not build a bigger, more inclusive airport. Today it could qualify as an international airport. Lynchburg probably wants to keep its commercial flights but I know the percentage of Lynchburg area travelers who use the facility is not high. Blacksburg area travelers are now 1/3 of the ROA traffic and growing. The airport connector bus has been a big plus for the airport. With the name of Blacksburg at the airport, the rest of the world will identify Blacksburg & Roanoke as one region. I think its a good economic move but I think it leaves Lynchburg to fend for itself.

Greetings,

I like the move too.

I'm not a big fan of the costs to do so, but it gives credit where credit is due.
Virginia Tech brings in a lot of traffic.

I'm not a a big fan of our leaders either, but looking back 50 year is a stretch.
But, you are right, it would have been a good investment.
