Hi everyone,

I'm moving to in 1-2 months for work and was wondering if any long-time residents have any advice as to where to live. I'm a single guy in his 20's looking to rent an apartment decently close to the city center (where my office is). Safety is a bit of a concern for me, I don't want to end up living in the wrong part of town by mistake! Apart from that, I understand Richmond isn't New York but access to some general single lifestyle options would be good. Price-wise, I don't want to pay through the roof but am willing to dig a little deeper for a good area / nice apartment. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

A lot of the twentysomething professionals in my office rent over in tobacco row ... Cool apartments by the river and close to downtown. The Fan would also be a great choice ... Lots of bars and restaurants within walking distance.

The Fan, Museum District, Carytown, Shockoe Bottom, Monroe Ward, and the parts of Church Hill close to Libby Hill park are all areas I would recommend.Basically everything east of the I-195 expressway, west of the area recommended in Chuchhill, north of the 195 toll road, and south of Broad Street. If you look at Google map you'll see that I'm basically recommending an area that's about 5 miles long. That's where all the nightlife is located and where plenty of young professionals reside. The area is very walkable and dense as well. Once you're familiar with the area then I would also look at areas such as Manchester and Jackson Ward.

I have a 22 year old works for me. Just moved to Richmond with his fiance and spent a good deal of time looking at various areas cost vs. apartment size vs. area.

They ended up in lofts off Boulevard (near the Bowtie Cinema) and have really enjoyed the area.

Thanks for the responses! Will definitely check out some apartments in these areas. Is it generally good to go through an agent or do people generally drop in / call up some places directly?

Drop in or call directly.

Renter's Agents aren't really a thing in Richmond like they are in bigger cities.
