My son left the apartment he had leased with a buddy to move back to his home state in 2005. The buddy apparently did $4800 worth of damage. Neither my son nor the buddy paid the damages. My son has since gotten a job and grown up tremendously and wants to take care of his portion of the debt to start to rebuild his credit. The collection agency wants $2800. My son doesn't have it and the buddy refuses to pay anything. What should he do?

Your son may be able to work out a payment plan with the collection agency. If his buddy was on the lease then the collection agency can go after him for the balance.

Negotiate a settlement for final payoff. If your son has some money he can get the collection agency to accept a lesser amount. Then the collection agency can go after the buddy for the remainder.

2005??? Contact the actual landlord. Tell him what you just told us. Chances are he'll accept your offer as PAID IN FULL and run to the bank with a huge smile on his face. Just make sure you get some sort of receipt that states his debt to his LL is satisfied. Skip the collection agency and go to straight to the source.
