I was talking to a friend on how it would be good to have a apartment or condo community for people who work at night. She is a musician in Austin and said she thought it would be a great idea because so many people (like musicians) sleep during the day and are always woke up by daytime activities.
What do you think? Do you think that that there would be enough of a demand for this type of development?
No. There really would not be enough of a market to support a complex like that. Additionally, you would have no legal way to control the hours of the occupants.
It's a nice idea - but not realistic.
No, not necessarily, but it would be geared to people who like things quite during the day. She was saying it is hard because the people who do the maintenance and stuff wake her up and of the course the lawn mowers and stuff. I was thinking if you had a complex geared to day sleepers, you would organize the staff's hours that way. The office would open late in the afternoon and be open until 9 or so for picking up packages, etc. Also, maintenance would be done in the early evenings or very early in the morning. I was thinking also about people who work all night in hospitals.
I was also thinking that since there are night time curfews for noise, why no daytime? Why not limit the amount of noise during daytime hours? Seems workable.
It was an intriguing idea and I thought I would just throw it out there!
I agree that it won't work for the reasons stated by the other poster. My advice for day sleepers:
1) blackout curtains
2) loud fan or "white noise" machine
3) antihistamine tablets (also keeps your allergies in check!)
4) unplug your phone and put a "do not disturb" sign on the door

I think until you have worked nights you do not realize how difficult life can be living in a world of day shift people. It is not just the noise, it is not having access to the facilities late at night or early in the morning like the pool, work out center, etc. It is being woke up with package deliveries and maintenance work.If you start your day at 6PM, the office is usually closed and so are many businesses. If you want to swim or work out when you get off work the early hours these facilities are usually closed. Some people, depending on where they live do not have access to the dog park at night.
I worked nights years ago in banking operations and I remember how hard it was to function. A fan, black out curtains, and do not disturb signs do not help people who sleep during the day. People will still knock on the door and it is not wise to publicize that you are gone at night. I think you have tried to over simplify the solutions.
I do think there is a need for this type of community where people who work at night can do all the things everyone else does during the day and I think that these type of communities will be more and more common in the future as we continue grow into more of the 24/7 businesses.

I know a community of vampires that would be happy to assist.
But seriously, working nights and sleeping during the day has recently been proven to be a very unhealthy lifestyle!
Imagine no medical staff between 11pm and 7Am in the hospitals, I am grateful there are people who are willing to work these terrible hours !
