Look for homes on the southside, westside, or Rapid Valley. Expect a home to be between $400-$1000 per month depending on age, size, and amentities.

First of all i want to say thank you to all who replied to me. This is a very exciting and scary thing for me to do. I've never moved unless it was under the roof of my mom or dad! But i've got big girl things to do now! lol. I have a silly question though, alot of you have given me the suggestion to stay on the southside or westside (which i definetely appreciate, with having a 5 year girl) but in the iffy neighborhoods...in your opinion, what makes them iffy? The reason i ask is because i come from Kansas City which report tons and tons of crime on the news everyday. And to my shock, i saw a report that in the year 2006, there were no murders in rapid city....say what?! never heard of such a thing, i must say. I will still look in the areas that you have suggested, i just wanted to see if your idea of "iffy" is the same as our idea of "iffy" Does that make sense? Thanks in advance for the replies!

Rapid City, South Dakota (SD) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

Cosmo, you're right and none of us probably thought of that. If you check out the crime index for Rapid, you'll see that there were several years there were no murders there. Doing a comparison of the two places, you'd probably feel safe any place in Rapid.

A lot of people ask me this question. Rapid City does have a relatively low crime rate and I am sure that no matter where you live in Rapid City you will feel much safer than in a larger city like Kansas City, Minneapolis, or Denver.

The northside is where you will see homeless people wandering around, cheap hotels that rent at monthly rates, cars on blocks, run-down shanty houses, gangster wannabes running around all night, casinos, gun stores, pawn shops, porn stores, etc. It is just not that desirable of a place to live. My aunt lived there for a few years and nothing ever really happened to her. Her car was broken into a couple times but that's about it.

DannyBanany...don't forget about Shotgun Willies on WEST main, they have a good share of casino on the west side and let's not forget about what happened at Stevens HS,(a westside school) when the school was evacuated because there was a student who had taken a teacher and his entire class hostage.....Come on.......... let us get past this west side/ north side drama...like I said Rapid City is a great place to live

True, but that hostage situation was in 1990 and from what I've heard that kid has been in several mental health institutions since then. You can't even compare the affluence of the Westside to the Northside. It's just obvious. Does the Westside have bums, pawn shops, gun stores, casinos on every corner, 5 family houses? No.

Default Just my take...

Hey Cosmo! I am actually in the process of moving, but moving out of Rapid City and I don't want to. We moved here from metro Detroit, so we LOVED living here. I was 8 months prego when we came here and the friends I've made, and the neighbors that we have I will dearly miss. People are super nice here and the cost of living is good, and you certainly can get some great houses with big backyards for your $$. We live out in the Summerset area and just have loved it here. Our house looks at the hills in both directions and it's quiet and safe. Very family oriented, lots of kids around here. Oh and when I was in town today the gas was around 1.65. Please feel free to write me with any questions you might have. Have a great day! Enjoy South Dakota and Rapid City!

Michchix, it's great to hear that you've had a good experience living around Rapid City. Where are you moving to, if you don't mind me asking?

We are being transferred down to El Paso, TX. I actually stumbled upon this website while looking up stuff for El Paso. I have been on here ever since that, reading posts about El Paso.
