Not sure if this is unique to NC or not (ironically their cust service line is in NC) but I bought a few bags of this stuff - it's more mulch (and God knows what else) than actual soil FYI.

I don't think it is unique to NC (I'm pretty sure they sold the same brand at the Lowes I shopped in NJ), but I agree it is not the best topsoil product. Basically most topsoil that sells for that cheap ($1.50-$2.50) at big box stores will be a lower grade topsoil that contains a lot of wood chip filler in the mix. You typically have to buy a higher dollar product if you want screened topsoil comprised of finer particles.

Perhaps it should be labeled "Future Top Soil."

For most purposes for which I use top soil - which is primarily in my planting beds - I wouldn't mind a "chunky" soil that has some residual organic matter in it, as long as it's not too much "chunk" and too little soil - especially is the price is right. Gardening is all about patience, right?

We're talking a LOT of "filler" though. In fact I think it would be more accurate to call it mulch vs top soil. Guess it's just changed a lot since I bought it last some years ago (sigh - what isn't continually getting lower and lower in quality these days).

Anyway I guess the brand name was edited out for legal purposes so PM me if you want that info.

not sure why anybody would buy bags of top soil anyway. now I can see buying ground pine bark as a soil admendment but why not just go ahead and buy a truck load of screened top soil. then you really get good stuff and you can go and pick it out yourself..that is what i do and 5 cubic yards of top soil is really not that much when spread around. pretty, black ummmmgood soil..gotta love it

^^

A bag of soil here and there goes a long way when repairing a bare spot or two in a small yard.

?

Because that's all I needed? Why buy a whole truckload and spend extra $ I don't need to spend - and have no place to put the extra besides?

You can buy high quality compost at the Raleigh dirt/mulch place. I forget the name but it's on the NE side of Raleigh, run by the city. I took one look at that "top soil" at Lowe's and knew it was crap. On the plus side the compost is about the same price.

OK i was thinking about gardening when I made my "buy it by the truck load" comment. But then I am thinking about gardening almost 24/7. So I guess buying a few bags of top soil to fill in low places in a yard would be necessary. If you do find decent bagged top soil please let folks know cause obviously you are not alone.
