So.. if you reload you can't keep your own brass? WTF never heard of this anywhere else. I don't want anyone else's brass just mine.

Has anyone gone there and were not allowed to pickup their own brass?

I think the rule is once it hits the ground you are supposed to leave it. If the casings land on your bench you can keep them, but I've never seen anyone stopped from picking up their own brass off the floor. I don't reload but my buddy always grabs the broom and scoops up all he can off the ground when nobody is shooting. Now I'm glad he does. He turns the brass in for credits at his gun shop and uses the credits for reloads.

Thanks for the heads up Frog. Most guys working there are cool, only a few are....eh

You police your brass, it is yours, no one is going to object, don't think. The issue was the three profiting from the brass left at the range. If left, it belongs to the state to be sold for charity, not to line the pockets of the range officer.

I reread the link. It says if it hits the ground it belongs to the state of Fl.

They can SAY it but that doesn't make it legal to take YOUR property mearly because it is on the ground. If you set down your gun do they own it?

By that logic they would also own your shoes.

Context is everything

That quote was to keep the employees from stealing any brass that was left behind, not to keep the owners from collecting what is theirs.

I hope they nail these guys....

AGREED! But the signage should be VERY clear to anyone reading them so that they say something like your brass is yours unless you chose not to pick it up in which case it is collected and money from it is donated to whatever charity.

That's not the point. The point is that these guys were apparently selling brass that was left behind and pocketing the money. Thousands of dollars. I'm sure that if you wer picking up your own brass, no one was going to swoop in and tell you that you couldn't. If they had tried that, this whole scheme would have been discovered a long time ago.

They are state employees; they are not allowed to benefit from their jobs like this, and they knew damn well it was wrong. All the sneaking around and sealed envelopes makes that clear. They should be prosecuted, and the IRS should open a separate criminal investigation against them for tax evasion, I'm sure they didn't bother to report their brass earnings on their tax returns.

It's also worth noting that state employees can't just decide on their own to set up a fund for a charity at a state facility. That would have to be worked out with their bosses, or maybe even the head of their agency. Who were they to decide what charity they were supposedly supporting? (although they really were not). I'm sure that state would want to check out any charity befor setting up a program like that, and would more likely want to put the money into one of the many state wildlife programs.

Seems like that would have been the first clue that something was wrong. Also sounds like the big bosses don't get out in the field to to check on things in person often enough.
