Ok congrats on putting down conservatives but do you have anything to to contribute to the argument? What is your problem with nuclear power? I know the fact it requires alot of start-up $ isn't keeping you back. Do think they are dangerous or something?

And a free market conservative can still admit that the government exists for a reason. I know the world looks black and white from your point of view but as always there's a balance.

What we need is to become less dependent on oil. Big oil has run this country for too long. They own our goverment, and set our policies. Do you really believe we would be in Iraq if the area was not the worlds biggest oil reserve? We have the technology now to cut our dependence substantially but it is not being implemented because it conflicts with big oils interests. Look at the Alaska pipeline, it was sold to the people as being needed during the oil shortage of the 70's, but the oil was sold to Japan. What did the true owners of the oil, the American public get from it? Nothing. The goverment pays farmers billions of dollars every year NOT to grow crops on their land, and yet the oil companies spend millions to sell the propaganda that ethinol drives up food prices. Does that make sense to you? America needs new technology to spur jobs and manufacturing, and alternative evergy is that new technology. It may not be good for big oil but it would be great for America.

Drilling in more places and even building more refineries is just a temporary band-aid. It's just delaying the inevitable for a time, and at the rate oil consumption is increasing, thanks in part to the rising economies of China and India, I don't imagine that time will be very long.

We need to get off of our oil fix all together. Ethanol isn't the answer, nor is hydrogen, as they both take more fossil fuel to refine and produce than they output. We need to find real and sustainable alternatives, whatever that may be. Nuclear is certainly an option we need to pursue more.

There is no one answer, it will take all the alternative sources to reduce our oil addiction. We cannot afford to turn our noses up at anything that lessens our dependence on oil. It is not just a question of efficiency, it is also a question of control of our lives. We need honest competition in the energy industry to replace of the monopoly we have now.

I agree with what you're saying however, in the mean time a band aid is better than no aid. Any less oil from the OPEC cartel is a win, as much of a band aid as it may be.

We are in Afghanistan and were in Vietnam and there are no big oil reserves there.

There was no oil "shortage" in the '70s. It was one big myth which many people believed.
