The ATFs purpose is to collect taxes, and was created as a jobs plan for "revenuers" with nothing to due when prohibition ended. The organization has long since overstayed it's welcome and usefulness. They bumble every law enforcement action they get involved with.
I bumped the dupe thread by mistake, so I post it here instead. In the 1990's there were proposals floated to fold the BATF into the FBI. Sources in the FBI protested that they wanted nothing to do with the people in the BATF. I remember one FBI guy quoted as saying that when you mix a glass of clean water with dirty water, the dirty water doesn't get clean--no, you end up w/ 2 glasses of dirty water.
And this coming from the FBI, hardly pure as snow themselves. But apparently they considered the BATF to be even worse.
