"Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone proposed that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state. The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said. 'Our taxes are too high, our schools don’t educate our children well enough, unions and other special interests have more clout in the Legislature than the general public,' Stone said in his statement.
It has about as much chance of passing as the proposed state of Baja Arizona. Isn't L.A. and San Diego Counties also full of the liberally challenged anyway? Don't see much change coming out of it
It comes up about once a year, and it goes nowhere, of course. And this proposal is even more bizarre than the usual. It proposes that "South California" become a state composed of all the counties in Southern California - except for Los Angeles County. Yeah, I'm sure that would work.
Having lived in both the north and south of CA, it makes sense. They really SHOULD be two different states. I fully support it. If anything, NorCal belongs with the PNW and SoCal, well, I could not really care less.
Look up the State of Jefferson; pretty interesting. In fact I was doing some reading on this a little while back and there's quite a few out there that have been proposed; West Virginia was one of the few that came to fruition.
It doesn't seem illogical that California could be more manageable if split in half but I was wondering more if the states (any of the states) have something in their charters/constitutions that prohibit this or even talk of this.

Well if I remember right, the US Constitution has a provision in there that says to create a new state out of part of another state, is subject to Congressional approval
