It is a great time of year to go hiking - Camelback, Superstitions, maybe South Mountain. But with the auto theft problem we have here, will my car be waiting for me when I get back? Is auto theft common at these popular hiking areas?

It's not unheard of, but it's more common to hear about people smashing windows to steal personal property inside cars. Store everything out of sight when you park at a trailhead. As for the theft of the car itself, the risks are the same as at any shopping center parking lot. Use an alarm and/or a steering wheel lock to reduce the chances. By the way, this problem is not isolated to trailheads in rough areas. I've heard about it happening at Pinnacle Peak trailhead in north Scottsdale. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if theft were more common at trailheads near upscale areas because there's more to be stolen.

Default auto theft

Auto theft in general is a problem in border states.

Knock on wood, I've not had a problem in 20+ years here - YMMV.

As Silverbear said auto theft isn't common at trailhead parking areas, but car break ins are. Meth heads prowl the lots looking for phones/Ipods etc. left in plain sight. You could save yourself a lot of trouble by parking in adjacent shopping center lots and walking an extra block or two when it's possible.

Don't leave anything valuable in your car/truck. I am an avid hiker and see a lot of suspicious people in the parking lots-I guess we are all fair game. The Supers are really remote and have noticed an increase of people on the trails in the past few years--Have met some really Strange people out there.....I Don't go as often as I would like--

SAD-

I wouldn't leave anything valuable in your auto.

I've seen broken glass at south mountain, camel back, and north mountain. Pick your poison.
