Abington/Glenside (York, Easton, Jenkintown: middle-class, neighborhood, theatre)

If I was going to drive through Abington/Glenside area, where would I want to go in order to get a feel of what the area is like? Is there a main "business or entertainment" section (stores, restaurants, etc)? Which roads would I want to drive down?

Also -- are there areas of Abington/Glenside that I would want to stay away from? From previous posts, it sound like I should stay away from Crestmont and maybe getting too close to the William Grove mall area.

to the western and southern areas of Glenside start to get shady or at least less desirable?

Yes, 611 (Old York Rd) and also Easton Road are where most of the stores are. Abington has a downtown area, along 611, but it's not really much of a town. Downtown Glenside is a nice little town area with some restaurants (the Keswick Tavern is one), some shops, and the Keswick Theatre. It's right off Easton Road, on Keswick Avenue. The area around Abington Hospital, especially across 611 from the Hospital (back by Penn State Abington) is very nice.

Crestmont is a lower-income to working-class black neighborhood. If you don't fit that profile, you may not feel the most comfortable living there. But in reality you shouldn't have a problem, if you needed to cut through there to get someplace. I probably wouldn't hang out near the "Crestmont Country Club" bar.

Ardsley is a working-to-middle class predominantly white neighborhood that is a bit run down in spots but a decent place to live.

The Keswick Ave. area in Glenside is about the closest greater Abington comes to concentrated "nightlife" although you will find some bars and restaurants scattered about. As BPP 1999 said, Easton Road and Old York Road are the main thoroughfares through town. Old York Road would be the more active, albeit traffic-clogged, of the two.

The Drake Tavern in Jenkintown has a strong reputation as a good night spot and draws some college kids from Arcadia.

The owners of the Drake also own the Kitchen Bar about two miles up York Rd. Decent food, nice atmosphere (and a big improvement over Alexander's). The Glenside Pub on Easton Rd. has good pub food.

The Glenside Pub.
The Blue Comet.

All 3 are in Glenside.

What the hell is lower-income suppose to mean, the place is so small and integrated that you hardly know that there is an area called Crestmont. Seems that you are living with 30 year old stereotypes.

I define lower-income as being less than what would be considered a middle-class salary for a given area. Granted, your definition of "small" may be different from mine. I moved out of Abington into the city back in the mid-90's. I'd be surprised to find out that my remaining family there who frequents Crestmont for church-related actvity would have forgot to mention the burgeoning diversity in that neighborhood.
