The term village is often used to describe places in the 3rd world. It is usually remote and poor. We have plenty of remote, thinly populated regions in PA but haven't seen them referred to as village very often. What town in PA would be properly described as a village?

Villages are unincorporated areas within townships here in Pennsylvania. Noblestown, for example, is a village within North Fayette Township.

There are no village governments in PA, they are governed by the townships where they are located.

A village does not imply poverty or 3rd world to me. I picture a village as a small community in a rural setting.

The designation of villages is PA makes no sense to me.

Technically a "borough" ... but very village-like - a couple of dozen houses, a church, a park, a bar and a local baseball team.

Also an abandoned coal mine.

Near Hazleton. with a population of about 96 ...

JEDDO, PA

I've never thought of village as being something associated with a third world country or "poor". I think they're just sparsely populated towns that are within a township.

I picture a "village" in a good way. I live in Kratzerville, which is in Jackson Township, Snyder County. We have two churches, a volunteer fire company, a Little League field, a bunch of houses, a small farm or two, and an ice cream shop. I would consider us a village. We have no government other than the township. Our mailing address is Selinsgrove. There used to be a one-room schoolhouse, but the kids now go into town to school. We do have activities, such an Easter egg hung, a firemen's carnival, VBS, outdoor concerts, and the occasional other things that are associated with the churches or fire company. People are friendly and know their neighbors. It's a great place to live.

Some other places that come to mind: Shunk in Sullivan County, Barbours and Slabtown, both in Lycoming County, Dice in Union County.

A village in NY State is an incorporated unit of local government with defined limits. An unincorporated settlement in NY State is often referred to as a "hamlet". So moving south, PA's "village" concept was initially confusing.

I often wonder how PENNDOT decides where to place the "Village Of..." signs. Probably wisely, there are no such signs in Derry Twp., Dauphin County, around Hershey.

Oh, yesterday I drove through the village of Washington Boro. That could get confusing...
