LAS VEGAS -- After Andrew Linn fell asleep at the wheel during a Thanksgiving visit to Las Vegas last year, he drove into a yard and through a chain-link fence, forcing a pole through the windshield of his car.

The pole didn't stop there. It entered his face and came out the back side of his head.

Very scary. Amazing that he survived. I have fell asleep at the wheel before. Ended up destroying our van while the family was asleep. We all made it out without a scratch. Still you never forget that situation or the sickening burning smell that happens when an airbag is deployed. It took a while to get that smell out of my mind. For me it was the damage I could have caused my family or others. A big Diesal truck minus the trailor and a 2 door saturn were also part of my wreck. Both had minimal damage and were able to drive away. We ended up staying the night in a hotel room. That was back in December of 2007. I still remember it very well as I am sure this man will also vividly remember what happened to him.

I was taught the importance of gettin plenty of sleep before a long drive anywhere. I also take a 30 minute break after 2 hours of driving. I read somewhere that after driving and taking the break it can take that long to register that you are too tired to drive. Sure I know how we like to push ourselves behind the wheel. I have done it in the past. You know how it goes, just 10 more miles, or just another hour and then I will stop. One of the last things I remember doing before falling asleep is saying I will pull over at the next exit as I passed an exit that I could have stopped at.

Not to detract from the story, I just wanted to add that this kind of thing does happen a lot. I would bet that half of all drivers can share an experience of falling asleep at the wheel. I bet that a lot of people can share an expereince where they were in a wreck. I doubt anyone can top this story though of how this man survived having a part of a fence pass through his head. Just amazing.

Please be safe out there and get a some sleep before you drive.
