Hi,

I will be visiting in about 3 weeks and want to know how much does it cost to drive on the 73 Toll Rd? I want to make sure I have the right change or dollars.

Thanks!

Once you actually move there, just get a transponder from http://www.thetollroads.com/home/index.htm (broken link)

During your visit, just keep a bunch of 1's and quarters in your glove box. We turned in our transponder when we moved last year so I don't recall the rates. Look at their rate calculator and map here:

HTH!

We use our transponder for the 91 and 241/261....
But I just checked our statement and it was:

03/14/07 13:34 73 Catalina View North Lane 12 -4.00 0.75
------------ ---------
TOTAL AMOUNT -4.00
TOTAL VALUE PRICING 0.75
------------ ---------
TOTAL FOR TRANSPONDER -3.25

$3.25 quite expensive for 1 way--and some of the other toll roads can be as much as $5.00 each toll and thats cash-- and Toll booths do not always have a person in them.. so have plenty of quarters.

You can't put a dollar amount on getting home early, with the kids still awake, the spouse is happy to see you and dinner still warm.

I love my toll fwy transponder when I take the 73 shortcut from LA to San Diego.

Worth every penny.

I have a transponder for all 3 of my cars. They all share the same account.

BTW, watch your speed on the 73. The CHP is pretty hot, even during the evening hours. They sit and wait in the corners and in the dirt section in the middle. It's easy to hit 85 mph going downhill.

Just a warning, the manual toll machines are unreliable at El Toro. I used the 73 toll road a few weeks ago, paid the $2 toll, and got a "notice of toll evasion" today. This is bogus, they have me on video camera putting in $2 (it's clear the money went in), the machine confirmed it, and I have a witness.

I thought these people were pretty professional, but apparently when it comes to other peoples money they won't bother to check a simple video. The fine is $47.50 plus $2 they want me to pay a second time. $97 if not paid in 1 week. That's not a lot of money to me, but they have no right to ask for it.

The only thing I can think of that would explain this is if the machine considered us a second car, with the "previous car" also being us. It did take some time to find clean bills for the machine to use. Again, video surveillance would make this obvious.

In any case, they have right in front of them the proof that I paid. This is theft through incompetence, plain and simple. Any time you give a private business the ability to demand money from people at will, you have a conflict of interest. I want to go to court in front of a judge, I don’t want this same business to handle my claim.

73 toll is now $3.75 with transporter and $4.50 cash/without transporter.

I love my transporter as much as I love my on board GPS. both are time savers and negates spousal arguments.

I am no longer a frequent commuter. In fact, in 2009 I only used it 8 times. The transporter does cost you a monthly fee, but I think it is worth the money even to a inert traveler like myself. I only paid a total of $60 in 2009 for the 8 times I used it. Each trip saved about 1 hour of butt-numbing travel. So, in short, is $7.50 worth an hour of your time? Mind you, I have 2 toddlers, 2 labs, an SUV (gar gussler in traffic) a husband and I pinch pennies like there's no tomorrow. It is so worth the money to visit family in San Diego.

I did used to do the cash booth thing before ordering the transporter. In fact, I was actually a passenger when a friend did not have any change or cash to pay the full amount. There was no choice but to just pass through after looking under mats and chairs. He said he never got an invoice or notice. Then again, he is a good person with good karma.

All payments are online now. No cash. If you don't have a transponder, you will need to log on after passing through a toll area and pay electronically or you will be fined.
