Sure Munster is a nice town, but it has one huge flaw to it that no other town in the area has. It smells like garbage! Literally. They've turned much of the landfill into beautiful Centennial Park, but the landfill still remains, as does the smell of it. Anytime there is a north wind, that horrible scent can be smelled in the gorgeous subdivisions to the south, such as Cobblestone. I have a buddy who lives in there too and he said he smells it all the time. How can you buy a $500,000 house when it's going to smell like garbage half the time you walk outside your front door? No thanks

I've always figured anyone that would live around the landfill must be daft. I don't like Munster at all, or most of the people in it that I've met. I don't know why they think they are high and mighty, they are bordered by Lansing and Hammond after all! The average homes there are nothing special.

I have read all 6 of your posts, and it seems like all you are doing is bashing the area. It seems like you really do not have any solid or meaningful interest with NWI, so why bother commenting?

No offense, but I feel most people would rather live in Munster and deal with the stench (which really, only affects the Cobblestones subdivision) as opposed to the tri-town area and the ongoing LCSC dilemma they are dealing with. Look at Munster schools. Top performance, two of the elementary schools have been completely rebuilt, the middle school has been expanded and renovated, and the high school is getting a natatorium and a top-notch athletics area. Lake Central (meanwhile) is stuck holding many classes in trailers while their schools continue to become overcrowded and slow down in performance. Spend $500,000 on a solid all-brick 20 year old home in Munster, or $300,000 on a brand new poorly built Olthof home with vinyl siding in Dyer/St. John? No thanks...give me Munster any day.

IDK why you'd care to read all my posts. Weird. I have plenty of information about the area, I grew up there. That's why I post. I left Indiana because it's too slow and hickish for me.

The only people that like Munster are the people in it. Even some of those hate it. Just because one lives in the tri-town doesn't mean they have to go to a public school. I know a lot about Munster High School and it's not great as you make it sound. I have no idea how LC is doing these days, I graduated in 1998. I'm doing well for myself and went to an elite university, so they must've done something right. But in all honesty, if someone is intelligent, it doesn't really matter what school they attend. Who said one has to get an Olthof home?! Yes, get a Munster home that constantly has sump pump problems....or maybe in a flood zone. You take Munster. Personally, I would get a home built by a contractor I trust, I wouldn't buy a speck home. There are other options you know.
You are wrong about the stink being only by Cobblestones. I've smelled it over by Greenwood/Broadmoor. I don't like the houses over there.

Pshhh...houses in Munster are going for a half million now?! That's absurd! Region Rat territory should NEVER cost that much!

I hate to burst your Region-bashing bubble, but $250k is the median home value in Munster. Munster, Indiana Real Estate Market - AOL Real Estate

So of course there would be homes at and above $500k or else that median would not be as high as it is. And in fact some homes sell for much higher than $500k: Munster Homes for Sale & Munster Real Estate - IN | Homes.com

And while it's perfectly fine that this alleged stench bothers you, it clearly isn't a problem to everyone else otherwise people would move elsewhere and it would be reflected in decreased property values. That's most clearly not the case, don't you agree?

Hey Sand ... ok, message heard, NWI isn't the place for you. Boo to your parents for bringing you up in such a cesspool and shame on LCHS for providing you an academic environment that enabled you to pursue an elite education and now can live in the NYC metro area ... yea, the region is a cesspool alright.

Know what ... people tend to read posts from those that come here that are extreme to see if they can better understand why someone:

A: cares so much that they would choose to bash an area in which they don't reside (now who's weird?)
B: well, there isn't a B ... focus on what you are doing now. Enjoy the home of the Children's Television Workshop. However bitter you are, no matter how you were wronged by NWI, Munster is still a highly desireable area. Your postings reveal a lack of maturity.

Ya know, I was actually thinking about putting "and this is no direct attack at you Northwest Indiana" at the bottom of my post, cause I figured you'd take offense to this. I've not attacked Munster nor have I put any inaccurate information within this post. The land just south of the dump smells, it's just the truth. Actually, I prefaced it by saying that Munster is a very nice town.

Someone thinking about buying in that area would DEFINITELY like to know that. To turn my post around and attack the tri-town area, specifically LC, was very uncalled for.

I really wasn't attacking you. Every area has "ugly truths" and I was just pointing that out. The area just south of the former dump DOES have issues with the smell sometimes...you are absolutely CORRECT....but when "SanD80" said that the area around Broadmoor and Greenwood smells from the dump too, that was just plain ludicrous! The distance from Broadmoor/Greenwood to the former dump is about the same distance to the 41/30 shopping area...and there is definitely no smell there!....He decided to make the minor stench issue into a MAJOR one and then when he decided (in other posts) to refer people to St. John instead, I wanted to paint the fact that every area has some issues and the LCSC is a more significant issue to the tri-town area than the stench issues are to Munster. St. John, Dyer, and Schererville are very nice towns as well..You KNOW that I do not go around bashing other towns. Yes, I do become defensive when people (especially those who do not reside in the area AND have no interest in the area) speak as if they still live here and know what is going on. In all honesty, what was the point of beginning the "Munster stench" thread? Was it to find a solution to the problem?
