Airplane Noise in Chantilly (Centreville, Leesburg: to buy, living in, shop)

Hello!
My we are relocating to NOVA for my husband's job. His new office will be in Chantilly. We are considering living in Chantilly to keep his commute time down. But, he is concerned about the possible noise that the Airplanes would cause since Dulles Airport is located here. Is this a big deal? Are there other areas close by that would be better to live in? We have a 3 year old and 1 year old son and would like all the conveniences of shopping and a nice, family area.

Scroll down a bit - and look for the map with the red/green/blue lines all over it. The red/blue lines represent traffic taking off/landing at Dulles. I can verify the east runway's concentration of red/blue... I had some friends in Centreville directly south of that runway (south of Rt 28) - the constant drone of planes lining up to land was not necessarily bothersome, but it was noticeable from indoors. I can't say I'd enjoy living with it.

Also note Dulles is now putting the finishing touches on a new runway - it's the western-most N/S runway on the first map hts linked. There are also plans to build another runway south of the runway that runs parallel to Rt 50. I'm not sure when that will be built or how that will affect the surrounding area.

I'd say don't live in chantilly if you're HIGHLY sensitive to airplane noise. I've lived in chantilly for 5+ yrs and it hasn't bothered me.

I used to live in McNair Farms and never had an problems with airplane/airport noise. You will probably here a 747 or 777 flying low at times. But the noise isn't lifestyle altering by any means.

Airplanes are a lot quieter than they used to be. Only the most sensitive to noise should worry about it in that area.

We lived in South Riding for two years and I was never bothered by noise. Do not make it even a factor in deciding where you will live.

I guess I'm very noise sensitive then. I live in Ashburn and am very annoyed with the planes. The problem is that the noise isn't constant (as in highway traffic noise) but comes and goes. I used to live 50 feet from an eight lane freeway and that noise did not bother me at all. One factor could be that our windows are old and we have vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms and this seems to make it easier to hear the planes.

We have decided not to buy in an area where you can hear the planes, i.e. NE and NW Leesburg is very quiet. That map was very useful, btw so thank you for that!

We live in Southriding area. The planes are not a bother. Generally here the distant roar in the evenings and nighttime. Certainly doesn't keep me awake.
