Like the title says, we are looking for areas to explore, for possible retirement, in the area north of Scranton, but, semi rural. Would like to find a building lot 1-2 acres.

North of Scranton will put you in the region of active Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction. Land prices have spiked and the gas drilling has increased traffic and transients in what used to be the quiet stone wall country of Susquehanna and nearby counties. If I were in your position I'd be looking for areas where the wells are already drilled not where they are going to be.

Completely forgot about the drilling going on. Will have to keep that in mind if we start to explore the area.

You can look at areas in the Clarks Summit, Dalton and Waverly boroughs. Also, I would consider anything around Elk Mountain.

If you are looking for acreage you may also want to consider Newton Twp. or Ransom.

I would try to stay away from areas where they're drilling for gas. The North Pocono area might be a good bet...Jefferson Township, Lake Ariel...

Tunkhannock, Dallas (closer to WB I guess), Factoryville are a few others I would consider.

I hate to say it, but, I think the gas drilling is probably going to be all over the place in the coming years. It's slowly seeping south from Susquehanna County so keep that in mind as others have mentioned. I live in Dalton and it's a great little town. Has everything you need and you are only a few minutes from Scranton. It's quiet, the people are friendly (for the most part), and it has nice scenery. That's my .02 cents.

We moved to Jefferson Twp. three years ago, and we very much like it here. Good school district, I term it semi-rural (less than 15 min to Hamlin, Scranton, Dunmore). Plenty of lots for sale around here. Good luck in your search, and DM me if you need any help or information!

Likely there will be drilling around you anywhere in this area at some point in the future. Big part of the reason we're not looking to buy anymore, just to get out of dodge.

But you might try Nicholson. It's a quiet little town and seems to be attracting a lot of retirees lately, and on the outer edges of town there are larger parcels.
