Or how about an uptown casino hotel with 500 to 1,000 rooms.
I'm for this 100 percent. I would prefer that gambling be a thing to do while in town (Charlotte) rather than a huge become a gambling destination. I base this on my life in London where gambling is legal and strictly controlled for some hotels, betting shops, and other approved places, but not so big that it brings in the wrong crowds and crime. It would be a great economic boost. I hate what Las Vegas has become over the years. I wouldn't want to see any other place end up like it. It isn't our grandparent's Las Vegas.
Interestingly enough, two of the cities in Virginia that qualify for casinos are bigger areas like Richmond (voters there rejected a casino in a referendum) and Portsmouth.
I have long said I think the ideal spot is the four corners where I-95 and I-40 intersect. You get the snowbirds on the Florida migration, folks headed to the beach and many others.
Charlotte gets lots of people uptown for conventions, sports, entertainment, etc. A casino and gambling available centrally would make the city a much bigger destination. We are a great spot to offer gambling opportunities with a close-by international airport, an excellent highway system, a highly populated region of the country, and being on a well traveled north-south route to the beaches and Florida, etc.

Could be the thing for Charlotte to finally get a 1,000 room hotel. Harrahs in Cherokee and Greensboro are the only two places in the state with a 1,000 plus room hotel.

Absolutely. We need the additions to make us more at a Monte Carlo and not Tunica level.
A developer wants to build a casino just north of Greensboro in Rockingham County. But seems to me state laws would have to change first. If everything falls into place, the Triad would become the first home to a casino in North Carolina outside of an Indian reservation. But the location could meet some resistance from nearby locals. If the developers build closer to the urban centers they'll meet less resistance as opposed to building out in farm land where rural folks don't like change.
Apparently there is a real chance casinos as well is video slot machines across the state will all be legal in North Carolina.
The Triad, The Triangle and the Charlotte area would all get one in addition to one in the Southeast part of the state probably near Wilmington. Sites outside of Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh in adjoining counties have been identified. The rural counties outside the urban centers were chosen because they are economical distressed counties but still had to be close to the large cities where there are hotels, airports and other urban amenities
In the Triad, I see a unique opportunity for Greensboro in which one could be built on the Four Seasons Town Centre mall property at I-40 and Gate City Blvd. which includes the Koury Convention Center. The coliseum is just up the road. A new hotel casino there would help rejuvenate the mall bringing in more shoppers and having such entertainment options within walking distance to the Koury Convention Center could help lure more conventions to the city.
Downtown High Point could also use a year-round draw to balance the Furniture Market expo crowds.
But as someone who clearly remembers the fire-and-brimstone crowd shooting down the idea of even having a state lottery in the legislature year after year... to see this kind of acceptance of gambling is kind of wild.

Once legal, the state would have to allow casinos in counties besides Rockingham, Nash and Anson. If allowed in Guilford County maybe we could see something similar in the vacant Sears building at Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro. High Point could really benefit from this with the furniture market being there. My guess is that legalization will be heavily regulated to prevent cities from turning into Las Vegas or Atlantic City, NJ. But the whole thing is a shock, especially to know that a lot of Republicans in the state legislation supports this. It was only a few decades ago they fought tooth and nail to prevent the state lottery from happening.
Rather have slots/gambling sites. Hopefully a Lumbee site. Really hope that they develop a casino that has restaurants/shops around the floor. Outlet mall/go-kart/nightclub/entertainment off the floor. Also, entertainment on the floor as well. Music/Sport arena. I am okay if just on Indian Reservations casinos provide a boost to the people residing on the Reservations.
